For a decade, AbhiBus tried to out-market RedBus and lost. Then COVID almost killed them. Then ixigo acquired them. What happened next is the most interesting comeback story in Indian travel.

A 4.8 Rated Bus Booking App is Killing RedBus — And You Know How.

RedBus has been the ultimate disruptor in the Indian bus industry. For the last decade they targeted the category so relentlessly that they literally became it — people don't search for 'bus booking', they search for 'RedBus'. The brand has eaten the category. That is absolute market dominance.

The Indian bus market: for years, a one-horse race.
The Indian bus market: for years, a one-horse race.

The B2B Origins Most People Don't Know

AbhiBus didn't start life as a consumer app. When they were founded in 2008, they were a pure B2B tech company — building e-ticketing systems, PoS terminals and fleet software for State Transport Corporations like APSRTC and TSRTC, and for hundreds of private operators in South India. They understood the 'pipes' of the Indian bus industry better than anyone else in the country.

The Failed B2C Attempt

A few years in, AbhiBus tried to extend into the consumer market. They launched the app, ran the campaigns, opened up online bookings. But RedBus had already captured the mindshare — aggressive marketing, Naspers/MakeMyTrip backing, a brand that meant 'bus'. For nearly a decade, AbhiBus tried to compete on brand and lost. They remained a respectable #2 in some southern markets, nothing more.

COVID: The Near-Death Moment

Then 2020 happened. Travel went to zero overnight. For a company whose revenue depended entirely on bus movement, this wasn't a dip — it was an extinction-level event. There were no tickets to sell, no commissions to earn, and no certainty about when normalcy would return. The company was bleeding with no runway in sight.

COVID crushed travel — and nearly crushed AbhiBus with it.

The ixigo Acquisition — A Second Life

In 2021, ixigo acquired AbhiBus fully. For ixigo, it was a strategic bet on the bus category. For AbhiBus, it was oxygen. Overnight, they had capital, a consumer-brand parent with massive traffic, tech bandwidth, and — most importantly — the ability to stop chasing RedBus's playbook and write their own.

The Pivot: Stop Out-Marketing, Start Out-Building

This is where the story gets interesting. With ixigo's backing, AbhiBus stopped trying to win the brand war and went after the one thing RedBus hadn't truly fixed in 15 years: customer trust in the actual journey. They used their deep B2B integrations with operators to roll out industry-first products that solved real, unglamorous problems.

Industry-First #1: RTO-Level Transparency

In India, travel anxiety is real. You pray the bus shows up, that it's the vehicle they promised, that it's safe. AbhiBus was the first to surface actual RTO data inside the booking flow — bus make and model, insurance validity, PUC status, permit details. Before you pay, you know the legal health of the vehicle you're boarding. That's an engineering solution to a psychological problem.

Industry-First #2: Real Bus Photos

The second thing they shipped was real photos of the actual bus — interiors, seats, cleanliness, the condition of the luxury buses you're paying a premium for. No more trusting a rendered image or operator description.

They show you real bus photos. You check the interiors, the cleanliness, the luxury — before you pay a single rupee. No more 'hoping' for a good seat.

Industry-First #3: Abhi Assured — The 150% Refund

The boldest one is Abhi Assured. If a bus is delayed beyond a threshold or cancelled, AbhiBus doesn't just refund — they pay up to 150% back. They took on the operator risk themselves. This flipped the default customer stance from 'hope it goes well' to 'protected either way', and it resonated hard with a younger, digitally-native audience that won't tolerate hassle.

The 1 Lakh Crore Opportunity

Only a small share of Indian bus bookings are online today, and the broader bus travel market is still headed toward ~₹1 lakh crore. That leaves enormous room for whoever earns the traveler's trust. AbhiBus is no longer competing with RedBus on ad budgets — they're competing on product experience in a category RedBus optimized for availability, not reassurance.

The Growth Verdict

AbhiBus is the comeback story Indian travel needed. B2B roots. Failed B2C attempt. Near-death during COVID. Full acquisition by ixigo. And then — with capital, confidence, and engineering DNA — shipping trust products the incumbent hadn't bothered to build. They stopped trying to beat RedBus at being RedBus. That is exactly why they're finally growing.
